Yup, that's his real name. Born December 15, 1949 in Flatt Creek, Missouri, he basically grew up in Wichita, Kansas. His acting career began when he was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Kansas in Lawrence, after being seen as the lead in a high school production of "West Side Story." He studied there for two years before joining the American Conservatory Theater.
In his personal life he has had numerous battles with drugs and alcohol, and we can only wish him the best in staying straight and sober. He has a son, Jesse, with actress Patti D'Arbanville ("New York Undercover"), has been twice married to actress Melanie Griffith and has a daughter, Dakota, with her. He is now divorced again, but is rumored to be seeing the 18-year-old co-star of Nash Bridges. He's not commenting.
